Spitfire in air crash at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire




Police and other emergency services are at an incident in Coningsby following reports of an aircraft crash.

A Spitfire single occupant aircraft came down in a field just before 1.20pm today (Saturday, May 25) and no-one else is thought to have been involved.

The Second World War fighter plane was part of a Battle of Britain event at RAF Coningsby.

Road closures are in place in the areas of Dogdyke Road and Sandy Bank.

Drivers are asked to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

UPDATE: Police have said the pilot of the aircraft died in the crash.
