Fundraiser set up after Wyberton traveller camp leaves wood with ‘unexpected bill’
A fundraiser has been set up after an unauthorised traveller camp caused damage to a wood.
More than 20 caravans forced their way onto land at Jenny’s Wood in Wyberton on Monday (April 14), before being moved on two days later.
However, the Boston Woods Trust says it has been left with a ‘large unexpected bill’ for the site, which is a popular site for the public.
Damage was caused to the entrance while some trees were cut down.
“We took quick action and have got the travellers off site in time to get tidied up for Easter,” a statement issued by the trust explained.
“However, apart from some mess which can be cleared up and damage we will work around, we are also left with a large unexpected bill.”
After consultation with the police and Boston Borough Council, trustees decided to take civil action to ensure the swift removal of the camp, with bailiffs serving an eviction order on Tuesday.
The bailiffs, supported by police, were on site on Wednesday morning to oversee their departure.
“Some damage was caused at the entrances, and a few trees have been cut down,” information provided on the GoFundMe page explains.
“The meadow looks in a sorry state and we can assume damage to the flora and fauna.
“However, the mess can be cleared up and due to our prompt action the damage has been limited.
“But solicitors and bailiffs come at a price and the bill will be in the thousands which we can ill afford.”
The GoFundMe page - which you can access here - has already raised £1,895 of its £5,000 goal.
So far it has received 91 donations.
