Wellhead Park in Bourne to host Picnic in the Park on Father’s Day

Families are invited to a free community picnic which returns to town at the weekend, bringing live music and gleaming classic cars.

Picnic in the Park began in 2021 to re-ignite the town’s social diary after covid cancellations.

It returns to Bourne on Sunday, June 16 - Father’s Day - hopefully accompanied by sunshine, from 10am to 4pm.

It replaced the Classic Car and Bike Carnival, but the day will still incorporate a classic car show at the Red Hall, organised by Hall’s Garage, of Morton, and the MG Club, which is expected to feature more than 100 motors.

“It’s a nice family event,” said Paul Fellows, of Bourne Events which organises the day.

“The first year we did it the weather wasn’t kind and we had to switch weekends, but it was still well supported and people came out.

“The emphasis is on a community day out for families to come and enjoy the sunshine.”

The community picnic will take place in the Wellhead Park which will host music and entertainment from local acts and choirs, as well as fairground rides, food outlets, and stalls.

Pitches are also available for a car boot sale at South Street car park.

It will be the final official event organised by the Bourne Events team which also runs the Christmas lights switch-on. Both will be passed on to Bourne Town Council.

“We were coming to the end of our shelf life,” Paul explained.

“Community groups will initially have lots going on and a really active group of people, but as people either move away or decide they don’t want to do it anymore, the events tend to go away, too.

“We wanted to give some longevity because we’ll always have a Christmas lights switch-on, and hopefully we’ll always have an event in the summer in Bourne, so it’s just logical to put them with a group that’s going to be around all the time.”
