Bourne Town are beaten by Lincoln United in the final of the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy

Bourne Town were unable to wrestle the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy from the grip of holders Lincoln United after defeat in the final on Wednesday night.

The Wakes went down to a 3-1 reversal against their United Counties League rivals in the final at Boston United's Jakemans Community Stadium.

Lincoln scored three times without reply in the first period and, although Zak Munton cut the deficit midway through the second half, they were unable to claw back the deficit after an opening to the game which had proved costly for Michael Goode's side.

The Bourne boss said: "We were probably out of the game by half-time and we just weren't good enough in the first half.

"We didn't get out quick enough for the first goal and I don't know where we were for the second one because we've just got done for pace after a long ball forward. The third goal was a free header and I can't remember the last time that we conceded from a set piece.

"I actually thought we responded quite well after the first goal and got to the edge of their box quite a bit but then gave the ball away which was symptomatic of the first 30 minutes."

The Whites had won both Premier Division North meetings between the two sides this campaign and were looking to retain their crown after beating Boston Town in last season's final.

They started in style by scoring two goals inside the opening 10 minutes before adding a third just ahead of the half-hour mark.

Aaron Eyett had sent a shot narrowly wide before Lincoln led in the fourth minute as Elliot Dye glanced home a near post header.

The Whites' lead was doubled five minutes later as a rapid raid saw Jaime Ture race clear before holding off the challenge of Bailey Baker and slotting home his finish.

Bourne then suffered a further setback when striker Tom Siddons was forced off injured and Will Bird was brought into the fray.

Scott Matthews saw a free-kick deflected just wide for Lincoln before the Whites' set piece specialist found the head of the unmarked Tom Hipwell to steer home a third goal for the holders in the 28th minute.

Bourne rallied well despite the three-goal deficit and Zak Munton curled a shot just wide before Zac Allen saw a free-kick tipped to safety by Lincoln goalkeeper Jack Steggles.

Steggles was then involved in some late first half controversy as Allen went down under the goalkeeper's challenge but referee Shemakay Own waved away the penalty appeals in what boss Goode felt was a crucial decision at that stage of the game.

He commented: "We were 3-0 down so I can't have too many complaints about it because Lincoln had dominated the first half but we felt it was a penalty.

"The next goal would have been crucial. If we they had scored for 4-1, it would have been game over but if we had made it 3-2 then every ball or shot in the box brings pressure."

As it was, Lincoln came closest to extending their lead in the early stages of the second half as Owen Vincent led a break before playing in Tris Drummond whose shot was superbly tipped onto the crossbar by Dan Swan in the Bourne goal.

Allen was bundled over in the box at the other end but again no penalty was forthcoming - although this time it was less blatant than the first shout in the opening half.

Richard Jones deflected an Allen shot narrowly wide of the Lincoln goal while Steggles was down to smother a first-time effort from Munton.

Munton then reduced the arrears midway through the second half with a delightful strike from outside the area that left Steggles grasping at thin air.

Although they pressed for a second goal, they were unable to breach a well-organised Lincoln rearguard despite coming close on a couple of occasions.

Brad Marshall was inches away from connecting with a back post header while Allen saw a late chance blocked by Steggles who then produced two superb stops in injury-time to thwart James Hill-Seekings and Robbie Ellis.

Goode added: "I thought we played some really good stuff in the second half.

"It was our sort of surface and it was the best we had played for a long time.

"Their keeper has pulled off three great saves so we've had the chances to make the last few minutes interesting."

Bourne return to league action on Saturday with a home match against Belper United.

Wakes: Swan, Flack (Rowell), Baker (Hill-Seekings), Ellis, Marshall, Jones, Munton, Archer (Wilson), Siddons (Bird), Eyett (Dunn), Allen. Attendance: 516.
