Bourne Town beat Hucknall Town to stay in contention for the United Counties League Premier Division North title

Bourne Town will be involved in a three-way final day United Counties League title decider.

The Wakes kept themselves in contention for the Premier Division North championship after a 3-2 home win over Hucknall Town on Saturday.

Although league leaders Lincoln United and second-placed Eastwood CFC both recorded victories, the Wakes can still pounce and leapfrog the duo if they both fail to win on the last day of the season on Easter Monday.

Bourne visit Harrowby while Lincoln are at Skegness with Eastwood having a home match against Belper United.

The Wakes go into the season finale after Saturday's triumph which attracted a crowd of more than 600 to the JJ Mac Stadium.

Home goalkeeper Dan Swan was forced into an early save to deny Chae Whitman-Brown before Bourne broke the deadlock in the 21st minute as a mix-up in the Hucknall defence was punished by Will Bird.

Zac Allen went close to doubling the lead shortly after before Richard Jones crashed a header against the Hucknall crossbar.

A second goal arrived on the half-hour mark as Allen's corner picked out Paul Malone who headed home a strong finish.

Bourne lost Bird to injury on the stroke of half-time with Allen, Zak Munton and Henry Dunn all being denied from close range in the final attack of the opening period.

A third goal would probably have put the contest beyond Hucknall who then got themselves back into the game within three minutes of the restart as they halved the deficit.

Whitman-Brown burst down the right before picking out Joey Ashurst with his cross to convert to bring the visitors back into the match.

However, within five minutes, Bourne had restored their two-goal advantage as Munton's free-kick found Malone who headed home his second goal of the game.

Hucknall weren't finished though and scored again midway through the half as Aaron Short's cross-shot found Niall Towle to turn home.

Malone sent an effort just wide as the centre-half sought an unlikely hat-trick before Shaun Archer was denied by a smart save from the Hucknall goalkeeper.

The visitors then pushed forward for an equaliser but were unable to break down with the Wakes going closest at the other end as Munton saw a shot turned onto the crossbar.
