Builders merchants Turnbull & Co Ltd has plans to set up Grantham branch

A proposal has been submitted to construct two new buildings in Grantham to serve as the premises of a builder’s merchant.

Turnbull & Co Ltd. seeks to establish a presence in Grantham on vacant land at Venture Way, which could create an estimated 35 jobs.

The business is a multi-branch building and plumbing merchant, with eight depots across Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

Established in 1895, the business’ closest branches are currently in Newark or Sleaford.

In the application, it is said that Turnbull & Co has a policy of employing local people wherever possible to “encourage trade support and important links with the local community, whilst lessening the impact of their development in terms of travel time and movements”.

The application added: “The applicant’s ethos is to support only local family businesses like their own, which they find creates a unique bond of mutual support and loyalty whilst ensuring that the local economy benefits from this strategy.”

If the plans are successful, the jobs that could be created include drivers, fork lift operatives, yard hands, trade counter staff, sales traders, office and accounts administrators, kitchen and bathroom designers and management positions.

These premises will be the first Turnbull’s site within Grantham.

The application said: “In summary, the proposal constitutes an entirely logical development of this brownfield site and will create significant business and employment opportunities within the town of Grantham.

“The proposals have been carefully designed to take-account of existing site restrictions (drain easements, etc.) and complement the existing vernacular environment, whilst achieving the applicant’s brief /requirements for a successful builder’s merchant business.

“The application contents raise no matters of particular concern and, in summary, there are no policy-based reasons why the proposal should not be allowed to proceed.”
