Heavy rain put River Witham through Grantham on flood alert

The River Witham in Wyndham Park, Grantham, was at risk of flooding on Christmas Eve (Thursday) due to heavy rain the night before.

The river was placed under a flood alert by the Environment Agency (EA), however the water level did not rise enough to flood the pathways through the park.

This was despite heavy rain and strong winds brought by Storm Bella on Boxing Day, which saw the Met Office issue a yellow weather warning for much of Lincolnshire.

A small boat was spotted floating down the River Witham after getting caught up in the storm.

Volunteers at Grantham RiverCare appealed online for its owner to contact them after spotting the boat along a stretch in Wyndham Park on Sunday morning.

A spokesperson said: “A small boat has floated down the Witham overnight, with it possibly breaking free with last night’s storm. We think it is from the Dudley Road area.

“One of our volunteers has managed to tie it securely to the park fencing.”

The boat was quickly claimed by the owner following the appeal.
