Then and Now: Grantham Inn was bought by the Bluets in 1623
In 1623 an indenture was made between William and Mary Jackson and John and Susanna Bluet of Grantham, writes Ruth Crook of Grantham Civic Society.
The Bluets paid the Jacksons £160 to take ownership of the Rose Inn on the Market Place. The Jacksons had previously shared ownership of the inn with Christopher Colby, a gentleman.
The sale also included all the houses, barns, stables, buildings, yards, gardens, orchards and gardens adjoining the inn. The Rose Inn was next to the Granby Arms.
Christopher Coleby was born in 1580. He married Anne Thorold and had 10 children, all born in Grantham.
John Bluet had lived in Harlaxton with his wife Susanna, where at least three of their children were born, Isabel in 1598, Jane in 1606 and John in 1610. His brother Anthony also lived in the village, but later also moved to Grantham.
William Jackson was originally married to Susan Wilkinson in Great Gonerby in 1595, but after his wife’s death he married Mrs Mary Hessenden, who was the widow of William Hessenden, who she had previously married in Barrowby in 1590 as Mary Lloyd.
