Old chair given military makeover after being found in Grantham shop

An old battered chair has been given a complete makeover using an RAF military uniform.

The wingback chair, which had been destined for the tip, was discovered within the former Cake Shop, in Watergate, Grantham, by colleagues from construction firm Kerr Love Ltd, which is carrying out work on the site.

But it wasn’t long before it had caught the eye of Grantham’s deputy mayor, Councillor Dean Ward.

Coun Ward, who spent nine years in the RAF Regiment in the 1980s, said: “They were happy to donate it to me after I told them about the project I had in mind for it.

“A few years ago, I came across someone that transformed chairs using military uniforms and it has always stuck in my mind. I’ve already got bar stools made out of uniform and even some cushions but as soon as I saw the chair, I just knew it was the perfect shape for this project.”

Coun Ward took the chair along to Grantham upholsterer Tony Buff, along with an RAF Regiment flight sergeant uniform and medals, that had been donated.

Tony was then able to transform the chair using the uniform.

Coun Ward is delighted with the result, adding: “Eagle eyed people will notice that the belt is upside down but that will be fixed next week.”

Coun Ward will be donating the chair to the RAF Regiment Heritage Centre at RAF Honington.
