Vets approved at Belton Garden Centre near Grantham despite 'hazardous junction'

Councillors have approved plans to convert part of a garden centre into a veterinary practice.

Members of the South Kesteven District Council planning committee agreed proposals to convert two ground floor rooms within Belton Garden Centre into a waiting room and a consultation room to form the veterinary practice, which will be independent of the existing garden centre business.

Councillors at the meeting on Wednesday heard how no animals will be kept on the premises overnight and bookings will be by appointment only.

Furthermore, the practice plans to operate between Monday to Saturday, between 8am and 5pm, which ties in with the hours of use that the garden centre currently operates.

The proposals have been met with rigorous objections from Belton and Manthorpe Parish Council over a “hazardous” entrance and the impact the extra traffic would have in the area.

Councillor Ian Stokes addressed the main points which were raised at a recent parish council meeting.

He said: “The current access egress is inadequate now for the current volume of visitors and the location of the entrance is hazardous. This is due to no slip road from Grantham.

“The proximity of the Belton village south west approach with all its National Trust traffic and the Belton Woods Hotel entrance which is not very far away.”

Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership advised on the nature, scale, and cause of the reported collisions since January 15 on this section of the A607 and concluded that they involved vehicles turning at the village junction and the hotel access and not actually at the garden centre access.

Councillors voted unanimously in favour of the application from Mr S. E. Baker of Metheringham.

The application was submitted by Orchard House Veterinary. The new practice at Belton would add another branch to its four practices currently operating across the county, in Waddington, Branston, Ruskington and Metheringham.
