Plans to expand roundabout on Lincoln’s A46 bypass revealed
Potential designs for an expanded roundabout on Lincoln’s A46 bypass have been revealed.
The project – which is currently unfunded – would change the Nettleham roundabout from two to three lanes and add a pedestrian bridge.
Lincolnshire County Council is currently drawing up detailed designs and acquiring land, with a planning application to be submitted in future.
It aims to reduce congestion on the busy roundabout where the A46 and A15 meet, and make it safer for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the dual carriageway to nearby villages and back.
The project is currently considered ‘aspirational’, meaning it doesn’t have a fixed cost or funding and may not proceed.
The bridge across the eastern side of the A15 would be 30 metres long and be six metres above the carriageway.
The current designs have been published in a report for the council’s Highways and Transport meeting on Monday, December 9.
Coun Richard Davies (Con), executive member for highways, said: “The A46 Nettleham Roundabout improvement project is part of the Lincoln Transport Strategy and would aim to increase capacity on the bypass around Lincoln to cater for increases in traffic over the next 10-15 years.
“By making the roundabout bigger, we would hope to improve traffic flows and enhance north/south connectivity. This would be achieved by adding an extra lane to the roundabout, as well as new entrance and exit lanes.
“The project would also include a new pedestrian / cycle bridge over the A15 East leg of the roundabout, which would create a safer transport connection between villages north of Lincoln and the city centre that would hopefully encourage more people to leave their car at home and walk or cycle instead.
“The current focus for the project is completing detailed design, acquiring the required land and preparing a planning application.
“Once this work is completed, a more accurate cost forecast can be produced and funding opportunities can be explored.
“At this stage, funding has not yet been identified or allocated meaning the project is not guaranteed to progress.”
