New CBS Reality Original True Crime Documentary to Explore the Roger Severs Murders
A new true crime series is set to take a deep dive into a case that shocked Rutland in 1993 – the murders of Derek and Eileen Severs. Currently airing on CBS Reality on Mondays at 10pm, “Donal MacIntyre’s Killer Evidence” is exploring 10 UK and US cases to demonstrate how forensic evidence is crucial in solving murders.
Hosted by renowned journalist and criminologist Donal MacIntyre, the series features serial killers, family murders and ruthless gang killings. Each episode delves into the details of the crimes, telling the story through the people who were there as each case was slowly unravelled. Extensive interviews with lead police officers, forensic scientists and expert criminologists shed light on how the pieces of the deadly jigsaw puzzle were put together using forensic investigation.
On Monday, 29th May at 10pm, “Donal MacIntyre’s Killer Evidence” casts a microscopic lens on the murders of Derek and Eileen Severs. Outwardly, the couple lived what appeared to be an idyllic life in Hambleton. Derek, 68, had enjoyed a very successful business career while his wife Eileen, 69, had been made an MBE for her charity work.
But behind the scenes, they were struggling to cope with their 37-year-old son Roger. Despite giving him an expensive education and clearing thousands of pounds of debts, Roger saw his parents as his personal piggy bank. Never holding down a job for long, his parents finally told him they would no longer bankroll his lifestyle.
In November 1993, Derek and Eileen disappear. The only person who seems to know anything about their whereabouts is Roger, who gives conflicting stories to their friends to explain where they are. The police are called, and when they visit Roger at his parents’ house, they find the property in chaos, with carpets removed and smouldering embers in their back garden.
Investigators quickly secure a warrant to search the house and arrest Roger. But when they arrive, they find him gone and stark evidence of a bloody and violent attack. It doesn’t take the police long to track him down, but when they do, Roger denies having anything to do with their disappearance. The police realise he’s a pathological liar and quickly pick his tale apart, but he refuses to tell them where the bodies are.
They know they’ve got their man but turn to forensics to crack the case. Through their local interviews, police already know Derek and Eileen keep their home and possessions in pristine condition. And so, attention turns to the family car. The breakthrough comes when forensic investigators find a fresh layer of soil underneath the wheel arches.
Other chilling cases in this new series include the hunt for Anthony Hardy, the ‘Camden Ripper’, Mark Brown, who killed two women in 2021, and Stephen Nicholson who brutally killed a 13-year-old.
As with all the episodes in this brilliant series, the story builds as we follow police through the initial investigations to the forensic experts whose ingenuity helps to solve the case.
The series also features commentary from experts in forensics and related fields, such as leading forensic scientists Tracy Alexander and Jo Millington. We also hear from forensic psychiatrist Dr. Sohom Das, pathologist Brett Lockyer and digital forensic expert Andrew Sheldon. These specialists interrogate the forensic evidence and explain how it was used to solve the murder case.
This fascinating new series shows that ultimately, forensics will always uncover the ‘killer evidence’ and put the murderers behind bars.
