Stagecoach announces changes to Spalding to Peterborough service to help school children
A bus company has announced changes to its timetables to help youngsters get to school.
The Stagecoach number 37 bus from Peterborough to Spalding will now arrive at 08.20am and in the afternoon, it will leave at 15.57.
These changes are intended to improve the service for students traveling to and from Spalding Grammar School.
Additionally, the current 17.10 service from Peterborough towards Spalding will leave 20 minutes later at 17.30pm.
The number 37 service stops in Peterborough then Eye, Crowland, Queens Bank and Cowbit.
David Boden, business development director at Stagecoach East, said: “We always work to offer the best quality service, so we are pleased to update our timetables to better accommodate the young people at Spalding Grammar School.
“Taking a bus is an easy, comfortable, and environmentally-friendly way of getting to school, or else to visit friends and family, go to the shops or get to work.
“And it is not just about the value or the environment, there are also social benefits as bus passengers on average undertake at least 20 minutes of exercise per day as part of their journey, which will often be cycling or walking before or after their bus journey.
“Research by the University of Leeds has found that a 10% improvement in local bus connectivity can be associated with a 3.6% decrease in social deprivation.
“So, it is important that we offer people any encouragement we can to learn the good habits of traveling by bus when they are young. It is the right thing to do.”
Student tickets are now on sale for the upcoming academic year.
A Town Annual Academic Year Student Ticket currently costs £1.58 per day for the academic year.
For shorter periods, young people can take advantage of a 30% Youth discount compared to the price of adult tickets.
This offers outstanding value on a range of tickets, which are available as day, seven day, 28 day and flexi 5 and 10 options.
Industry group, Bus Users UK, has recently released new figures to support its campaign to celebrate September as ‘catch the bus month’.
They show that if everyone switched just one car journey a month to bus, there would be a billion fewer car journeys and a saving of two million tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.
A brand new diesel car with a single occupant can emit more nitrogen oxides than a new bus carrying 50 or more passengers.
Moreover, buses and coaches account for just 6% of nitrogen oxide emissions from road transport compared to 71% for diesel cars and vans.
