Cley Hall Hotel in Spalding featured on Channel 4 reality show Four in a Bed and saw employee was branded ‘spiteful’ and ‘sly’ by other contestants

A well-known town hotel spent a week in the TV spotlight on a reality game show last week — and saw an employee branded a cheeky ‘sly fox’.

Cley Hall Hotel in High Street, Spalding, appeared on popular Channel 4 series Four In a Bed for five nights — beginning on Monday, April 15.

The hotel was represented on the show by former staff member Joe Diaper, who received some tough criticism from other B&B owners during his time on the programme.

In the reality show, four bed and breakfast owners battle it out and compete to have their business crowned the best value for money.

Each B&B has its own episode as the host — where owners showcase what they have to offer and hope to impress the other participants. At the end of the week, the winner is crowned and they receive a plaque to display in their establishment.

During the payment round at the end of the week, all of the B&B owners gather around a table to discuss the feedback they left each other and count up how much they had been paid for their stay.

The final episode, which was described as ‘backstabbing, explosive and confrontational’ by Channel 4, had many viewers gripped as the drama unfolded.

Some of the contestants feedback said the Spalding hotel displayed ‘model behaviour’, however all of the B&B owners underpaid due to lack of bacon rashers on the English breakfast, too much road noise during the night and said the room was too hot.

Joe was called a ‘sly fox’, ‘spiteful’ and one of the contestants even said he felt like Joe had ‘stuck a knife and twisted it in his back’.

The other B&Bs on the show were the Sportsman in Lancashire, Lahtle Wood Glamping in Yorkshire and Bumble Bee Barn Luxury B&B in Norfolk.

Despite the at-times harsh feedback from other contestants, The Cley Hall Hotel secured second place with 93% and Bumble Bee Barn Luxury B&B came first place scoring 95%.
