Plans to convert former Hills department store in Spalding into church are set to be refused
Plans to convert an empty department store into a church and community hub are set to be refused next week.
Members of South Holland District Council’s planning committee have been recommended to turn down The Lighthouse Pentecostal Church’s change of use application for the former Coney’s site in Broad Street, Spalding.
The church was hoping to change the use of the former Hills store from retail to mixed use, comprising of ancillary retail, cafe, play space, offices, church, community meeting place and food bank.
But council officers have recommended that the application is refused planning permission due to the loss of ‘retail space’.
A report to Wednesday’s meeting states: “The application site relates to a key building located within the primary shopping area.
“It is considered that the loss of retail related and town centre uses are not justified and in so the proposal would not contribute to the retail vitality and viability of Spalding town centre, instead replacing key town centre floor space with community uses.

“The applicant has not demonstrated through marketing that the floor space is no longer needed to form a town centre retail function or that more appropriate locations for community uses exist within wider town centre functions.”
But Senior Pastor David Sandhu had previously stressed to this website that the aim of the project is to bring more people to the town centre.
He had previously told us: “Childrens facilities are lacking, and this new facility will be a huge benefit to families in the area throughout the week while we continue to do church on a Sunday upstairs, where everybody will be welcome to join us”.
