Yobs have damaged trees at Donington churchyard and park

A churchyard has been vandalised.

Yobs have spray painted trees along St Mary and the Holy Rood Church in Donington - which last year welcomed home naval hero Matthew Flinders.

Trees have also been damaged in Flinders Park.

Lincolnshire Police is investigating the incidents, which have taken place between Saturday, March 29, and Thursday, April 10.

A social media post states: “We are investigating two reports of criminal damage in the Donington area.

“This was believed to have happened at some point between Saturday 29 March and Thursday 10 April. Trees along Flinders Park, St Mary and the Holyrood Churchyard were damaged with red spray paint.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have any information, or anyone who might have seen anyone acting suspiciously between the dates mentioned above.

“If you can help, please contact PC 340 Richardson Laura.Richardson@lincs.police.uk quoting crime reference number 25000208156 in the subject line.”

Finders Park suffered vandalism last year when phallic symbols were scrawled on a path along with broken glass and litter.

People lined the streets of Donington in July last year to watch as the coffin of explorer Matthew Flinders - who is the first to circumnavigate Australia - made its way to the church. He was laid to rest for the final time after his remains were discovered during excavations for HS2.
