All About The Cakes opens its doors on North Street in Crowland

A former midwife who is no stranger to a bun in the oven is opening a cake shop in the town where she lives.

Lisa Brown, 61, will welcome customers to All About The Cakes on 8 North Street, Crowland from 8am today (Friday, April 25) where they can enjoy the café space and sample cakes, hot drinks and afternoon tea.

After retiring from midwifery Lisa has followed her passion for cake making and turned it into a business.

She said: “I made my first wedding cake in 2012 and thankfully they are still married.

“A couple of people I made wedding cakes for are now divorced so I feel really guilty.

“People at work would ask me to make birthday cakes and it’s all gone a bit bonkers - I am known as the cake lady.”

Needing bigger premises after monopolising her kitchen, bedroom, garage, attic and shed, the perfect venue came up for rent.

She said: “When I retired I took over the whole garage and reconfigured it to make it work

“I needed more space and I had been looking for somewhere for a few years and the right building never came up.

“Then this did so I made a decision and went for it.”

Lisa, whose passion for cakes stems from her dad who used to bake as a hobby, applied to The Great British Bake Off but ‘never heard anything back.’

When weddings were cancelled during the pandemic Lisa, who is originally from Lincoln, baked thank you cupcakes and delivered them in the area.

She said: “During lockdown our oldest daughter was at university and the two youngest were at home.

“I had bought eight dozen eggs for the weddings so we baked cupcakes - but you can only eat so much cake.

“We made more than 3,500 cupcakes during lockdown and would play knock and run and leave them on people’s doorsteps.”

Some 600 cakes were sent to the post office and the churches in the area also benefited from their baking.

Married to Danny, Lisa named the shop to reflect the detail and flavours that goes into her creations - as it is all about the cakes.

She said: “I think it is important what the cake looks and tastes like.

“When you cut into it - what it looks like - if you put a white filling in a chocolate cake, it makes it look more appetizing.

“People eat with their eyes.”

It is important to her that everything is made from scratch with real fruit used to make fillings and flavourings.

She said: “I only use Belgian chocolate.

“Yes it is more expensive but it tastes and works better.

“It is all about the cakes.”

Lisa will employ a couple of members of staff to help at the shop but has a few nerves- one of which is learning how to use the coffee machine.

Decor includes a Mad Hatter’s Tea Party designed Grandfather clock from the Sue Ryder charity shop in Eye and two comfy armchairs.

She added: “I just want it to be nice, I don’t want it to be pretentious.

“I have a client base and this is about moving to somewhere bigger.

“I can offer afternoon teas every day and people can either come and eat in or takeaway.”

Lisa will offer customers a loyalty card and encourages them to bring a refillable mug to get a ten percent discount.
