Sutton Bridge RAF ceremony honours the fallen
The brave pilots and air crew who lost their lives while serving in the Second World War were honoured during a special ceremony over the weekend.
Sutton Bridge Parish Council once again held its annual service at the propeller memorial.
This memorial was installed nearly 30 years ago to honour all the nationalities who served at RAF Sutton Bridge.
In 1926, the Air Ministry founded a practice camp at Sutton Bridge which later became an air base in the Second World War.
Spitfires flew from the base and it was also home to the RAF Central Gunnery School.
On Sunday, a total of 25 dignitaries gathered at the memorial for the service, which was conducted by the Rev Paul Carey-Slater.
A representative from the Royal Air Forces Association attended the event and the standard was lowered.
Wreaths were also laid during the ceremony.
The event was followed by refreshments at the Curlew Centre in the village.
Parish clerk Robert Smith said the event was a fitting ceremony.
He said: “It was a lovely day. We had a fair attendance.
“We hold this service every year and it was a poignant event.
“It is important to remember all of those who lost their lives for our liberty.”
