Environment Agency is ‘open’ to proposals about using Spalding Coronation Channel for paddle boarding

The Environment Agency said that it would be ‘open’ to hear proposals about the use of a town waterway as a paddle boarding venue.

Photographer Julian Wheeler has put forward the suggestion of using Spalding’s Coronation Channel as a paddle boarding site in order to attract visitors to the area, as we have recently reported.

The Environment Agency is responsible for the waterway, which protects around 10,000 properties in the Spalding area since it was opened in 1953.

A spokesperson for the agency said: “The primary function of the Coronation flood-relief channel is to provide flood-risk protection to Spalding, and we would take this into account in considering any future proposals.

“We have not yet been approached about any changes to its function, but we would be open to look at proposals from official sources.”

Mr Wheeler, who runs Welland Photographic Services in The Crescent, is over the moon with the agency’s response and would like to speak to official groups to discuss the idea.

He said: “I am absolutely delighted that they are open to the idea - it shows that a national body is interested in our waterways.

“I have got the idea for it and it needs to be done through official channels. I am willing to meet with whoever is willing to progress it further.

“I think it would bring in a major influx of people to visit the town.”

Spalding councillor James Le Sage is also hoping to make the most of the town’s waterways by adding canoe portages and a slipway onto the River Welland, as we have previously reported.

Welland Yacht Club is also in favour of getting more watercraft onto the river.

Coun Le Sage has long been calling for greater use of the river by suggesting punting and is also organising a water day on June 8.
