‘Perfect’ ribbon cutting ceremony marks return of Spalding Water Taxi
Crowds gathered for the launch of a ‘greatly missed’ town service.
Following a year-long break, Spalding Water Taxi returned with a special ribbon cutting ceremony at the weekend.
His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Annabel Ward, cut the ribbon and enjoyed a ride on the taxi alongside MP Sir John Hayes – who shared some words for the memorable occasion.
Operations manager, Anthony Grunwell said: “There were lots of people on the day who came to support us – it was a lovely morning.
“The boat was very busy on Saturday and Sunday and I’ve already picked up four bookings for this week.
“It was the perfect morning and it couldn’t have gone any better.”
The event was also supported by Holbeach Brass Town Band, police officers, South Holland District Council and sponsors of the Spalding Water Taxi.
Due to low water levels the towns’ water service was unable to operate last year.
Anthony added: “The Spalding Water Taxi is part of the town and everyone on Saturday was saying how lovely it is to see boats on the river again – its nice to receive a positive response.
“When we were unable to run the service last year, I was constantly getting calls from people asking to book a slot and queries of when it will be open again.
“It’s just such a popular activity and I can see it has been greatly missed.”
The water taxi will now operate four days per week – setting off on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The service will also be going cashless however, for those who prefer to use notes and coins, tickets can be purchased from the South Holland Centre.
