Plans to repair historic Spalding bridge
Plans to repair an historic town bridge have been put forward.
Network Rail have applied for listed building consent to carry out improvement works on the St John’s Road footbridge in Spalding.
The wrought iron and timber footbridge – which links St John’s Road and Green Lane over the railway line – was built around 1860 for the Great Northern Railway Company.
The grade II-listed bridge is a rare and large-scale example of its type.
“Assessment of the structure has found that generally, the footbridge is in reasonable structural condition,” the design and access statement submitted to South Holland District Council read.

“However has been established that the pier angles are inadequate under the combination of wind and pedestrian live loading at the point where the top and bottom chord of the lattice truss girders connect with the pier.
“Therefore strengthening works are required.”
The scheme also includes plans for spot repairs to severely corroded elements across all spans and staircase and the replacement of the rotten timber deck, plus an anti-slip coating.
A grit blast, clean and repaint of the steel throughout all spans in the colour to match its existing look and the permanent removal of vegetation have also been proposed.
