Popular Sutton Bridge fish and chip shop to close after 55 years

The owner of a popular chip shop is hanging up his apron after 55 years of serving the popular dish.

Martin Baxter took on Sutton Bridge’s Baxter’s Fish and Chip Shop as a teenager 55 years ago.

But tomorrow will be his final shift as he prepares for retirement.

“I just want to tell my customers I’m sorry that it’s happening but the time’s come,” explained Mr Baxter, 74.

“I want to give my heartfelt thanks to all the customers over the years that have patronised me.

“I appreciate every customer who has come in over the years, and some people travel a long way.

“I also want to say thank you to all the staff that have helped me over the years. A lot have come to work for me and gone on to do great things and it’s been wonderful seeing them do well.”

The proudly traditional eaterie will fry until 7pm tomorrow.
