Crowland tennis courts could be refurbished if parish council plans are realised, says Philip Green

A town’s tennis courts could be refurbished in a move that councillors believe will benefit people of all ages.

Crowland Parish Council has began discussions regarding the possibility of relaying the town’s tennis courts, which are located on South Street next to the bowls club.

They are currently made of hard surfacing, but one has become so damaged it is nearly unusable and councillors hope to relay them with an all-weather synthetic surface.

Council vice chairman Philip Green asked the town’s Facebook group to provide feedback on the idea - and was delighted to receive no negative responses.

“They’re in a very poor state. Only one of the two courts is actually playable,” he said.
“With the influx of young families into the town, we thought that would be a good facility for them.

“A multi-surface one obviously gives a lot more possibilities.

“I think it would be a huge benefit. The plus side of a synthetic surface is it makes it suitable for other sports as well.

“So the likes of five-a-side football, volleyball, hockey. It brings a lot of possibilities in.

“The hope would be that if we get it done, there’s people out there who want to set up various clubs.”

Coun Green says the parish council will make a contribution to the cause, but are looking into obtaining grants from the Government, the Lawn Tennis Association and Lincolnshire County Council.

The tennis courts at Ayscoughfee Gardens in Spalding could also be refurbished with similar funding.
