Take a look around former Spalding Police Station, which is now up for sale
A unique - and historic - home which has been privy to many of Spalding’s scandalous goings on for more than 160 years has gone up for sale.
The Old Police Station, which is found on Victoria Mews, has a rich history to tell and retains many of its fascinating features, from sash windows to its original cell.
Current owner Jackie Allen said she didn’t realise the strong connections she had to the property when she first viewed it - but much more detail soon came to light.
“When I first viewed the property I had no idea what it was as it wasn’t advertised as the old police station,” she said.
“But I soon realised and I phoned my mum and said I’d viewed it.
“My mum was a police officer and stationed at Spalding so it was really special.
“We couldn’t believe it.
“A lot of old police officers come and look at it, so I now know what all of the old rooms were.
“It’s so lovely when they come and see it and tell you about it.”
The Grade II listed property was originally converted into a residential home in 1998, with Jackie one of just two owners in that time.
However Jackie, who bought the house in 2017, says she feels less of an owner and more like someone who is looking after a gem.
“I feel like more of a custodian of the house really. We’re all just looking after it.
“It was really dated when I got it so I’ve done things like draft proofing the windows properly.
“There’s other things I’ve done like taking up the plastic laminate floor in the kitchen and replacing it with parquet flooring which is much more in keeping with the history.
“You could never replace them but you can make them more energy efficient.
“I’ve tried to do things sympathetically because I’m a building surveyor - so I wanted to do things the right way for the house.
“It has kept the original cell which is a lovely feature.
“Next door, the cell has been knocked through so I understand it’s the only original one left here.
“It’s great with the brick domed ceiling and its window.”
The cell is now used as a reception hall, while there are interesting features scattered through the three bedroom property, which sits in a gated community with a garage and parking.
Boasting views of fellow iconic landmark the Sessions House, anyone would be sad to move on to pastures new from such a stunning spot, which is on the market for £360,000.
But Jackie feels it’s now time.
She said: “I feel ready to hand it over to someone else now.
“It’s time for someone else to enjoy it
“I think I will be fine seeing someone else living in it as I feel like I’ve just been looking after it.
“There’s so much history embedded in it - it’s 166 years old this year - so it’s time for someone else to look after it.
“It’s in a great location, it’s off the main road and very quiet.
“This is the fifth house I’ve modified and I’ve really enjoyed it.
“It’s a lovely house but I’m ready for another project now.”
