'Donington Co-op is here to stay' is the pledge from bosses
Co-op bosses have quashed rumours that their Donington store may close.
Rumours of closure began circulating following a break-in at the Market Place store.
Bosses say the store will go on serving the village and understand its role is more important than ever following the loss of Donington’s only other convenience store, Bargain Booze.
In 2016, the store suffered a devastating ram-raid when the front of the shop was demolished.
The premises were rebuilt over several months, during which time the Co-op provided a pop-up shop next door and customer transport to another Co-op in Billingborough.
The shop has also bounced back after a break-in during the early hours of November 29, although the doors were shut for a few hours until police investigations were completed.
A Co-op spokesperson said: “The Co-op is committed to serving the community and providing the extensive range of quality food, drink and services that our customers want and need, conveniently.
“The store opens between 7am-10pm daily, and aims to operate at the heart of local life. It includes a bakery, and a focus on fresh, healthy products, food-to-go, vegan and free-from foods, Lotto, PayPoint, award winning wines, meal ideas and essentials. “
Another Co-op feature is cash raised for community projects and Quadring’s St Margaret’s Church recently received more than £5,000.
Co-op members get a five per cent reward when they buy own-brand products, with the retailer donating a further one per cent to local community causes.
The Co-op is celebrating its 175th anniversary this year.
It also picked up the “Convenience Retailer of the Year” and “Food-to-go Retailer of the Year” titles at the latest Retail Industry Awards.
