Sutton Bridge roundabout project takes sail as fibreglass boat added to island
Visitors entering the gateway into Lincolnshire will now see the welcoming sight of a boat on a village roundabout.
The Sutton Bridge roundabout boat project is the brainchild of Coun Jack Tyrell who sits on both South Holland District and Lincolnshire County Councils.
It has taken a couple of years to come to fruition and the fibreglass boat is a special addition to the A17/Bridge Road to help improve visitors’ first impressions as they enter Lincolnshire.
Originally, Coun Tyrrell had found two ‘perfect’ wooden boats and was given the green light to go ahead with the project by the county council before deciding to use a fibreglass boat.
He said: “I wanted something as people came over the bridge entering South Holland and lit up all year round and at Christmas.
“This has been ongoing for nearly two years so I am pleased.
“We had permission to work on the roundabout and clean it.”
The project was made possible with support from Tears, Ashwood Homes, Tyrrell Contractors, Crusader Traffic Management and Long Sutton Men’s Shed.
Residents in Sutton Bridge have previously expressed their concerns at a parish council meeting that the area needs to be enhanced to encourage visitors.
Coun Tyrell added: “It is the entrance to the whole of Lincolnshire and it needed something.
“We can use the mast for putting up lights at Christmas and flying flags to celebrate whatever is going on. use it for putting lights on the mast.
“I think it will look good.”
