Long Sutton school: call for action over parking on zig-zags and speeding

Long Sutton councillor Jack Tyrrell is calling for action outside a school where some parents park on zig-zags to drop off their children.

The district councillor is also concerned about the speed of drivers as they approach University Academy Long Sutton (UALS) – formerly Peele Community College – in Little London.

Coun Tyrrell has asked Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones to step in so that community police officers patrol the area.

He said: “You need someone (a police officer) to go down and nick them for being on that zig-zag.”

Coun Tyrrell says speeding vehicles pose an added danger to children because stretches of the road are without a footpath.

Yesterday morning, two drivers parked on zigzags – on opposite sides of the road – to drop off children while most people used the school’s on-site drop-off.

Long Sutton resident Mark Chambers says there is constant speeding in Little London during all hours of the day, but it’s a major concern during school hours.

Mr Chambers said: “In the past I have stopped one driver who dropped his child off at the school in the morning and would speed out of the school and towards Long Sutton while other pupils walked down the road.

“ I reported this and he was spoken to by the police.”

In September Mr Chambers witnessed a head-on crash in Gedney Road that left both drivers with life-changing injuries. Although a speed camera van visits Long Sutton, he would like it to move around so all problem areas are covered.

UALS were asked to comment but none was received at the time of going to press.

* The speed of cars on Lutton Bank is also causing concern and Coun Peter Coupland has asked the county council to cut the 60mph limit to 40mph.
