Spalding United beat Stamford AFC in the Southern League Premier Division Central

Spalding secured the derby day bragging rights as Stamford slipped out of the play-off places following the Easter Monday match at the Sir Halley Stewart ground.

A penalty from Dan Lawlor had given Spalding a first half advantage which was increased after the break as the Tulips took control with three goals in 14 minutes.

James Clifton doubled their advantage before further goals followed from Joe Nyahwema (two) and Jack Roberts to secure an emphatic 5-0 win in the Southern League Premier Division Central clash.

The two teams went into the derby duel having lost just once each in the last eight games with Stamford's 17-point return from that sequence just edging out the Tulips' haul of 15.

Spalding made three changes from their weekend draw at AFC Sudbury with Dion Sembie-Ferris, Lamine Sherif and James Clifton coming in for Bart Cybulski, Maniche Sani and Kieron Freeman.

Stamford switched two of their starting line-up with Connor Bartle and Elliott Durrell replacing Billy Bennett and Joao Varela.

The opening 45 minutes were a tight and cagey affair with neither side really dominating proceedings.

Connor Brown and George Hobbins both hit early efforts over for their respective sides before Spalding made the breakthrough in the 20th minute.

Joe Nyahwema teased the Stamford defence with his run before being sent tumbling by a challenge Ben Isaacson and Lawlor converted the resultant spot kick by sending Stamford goalkeeper Tom Jackson the wrong way.

James Blunden headed just wide for Stamford from a Durrell set piece before a mazy run and shot from Nyahwema ended with Jackson making a smart stop.

Jack Roberts created the next opening for Spalding but his well-executed cross brought out a fine headed clearance from Jordon Cooke.

Liam Moore headed a late first chance wide for Spalding from a Lawlor corner as the Tulips held the lead at the break.

Nyahwema continued to cause Stamford problems after the break and shot over after another weaving run while Durrell saw an effort deflected just wide at the other end.

Stamford then came close to an equaliser as Ashton Offler sent a header against the Spalding crossbar before the Tulips struck for a second time.

Roberts burst down the right before producing an excellent cross which was converted at full stretch by the incoming Clifton at the back post.

The goal forced Stamford to go for broke in a bid to get back into the game and it left Nyahwema plenty of space to exploit and he duly took advantage to slot home the third goal.

Roberts then got in on the goalscoring act with Spalding's fourth of the afternoon as his well-struck low cross slipped through Jackson's grasp and into the net.

Jackson made amends with a superb save to deny Nyahwema but he was powerless to prevent the Spalding winger from making it five late on as he slotted home at the back post from Bart Cybulski's pass.
