Former Manchester United, Nottingham Forest and Peterborough United goalkeeper Luke Steele joins the management team at Deeping Rangers

Former Manchester United and Peterborough goalkeeper Luke Steele has joined a new-look management team at Deeping Rangers.

Steele has been appointed in a player-coach role with the United Counties League Premier Division North club.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper had finished last season playing in the National League with Notts County after appearing earlier in the campaign in the Spalding Sunday League as a striker.

Steele – who also played professionally for Coventry City, Barnsley, Bristol City, Nottingham Forest, Millwall and Greek side Panathinaikos – had turned out for Jubilee after deciding to hang up the gloves and don his shooting boots.

His prolific spell for the long-established Spalding Sunday side saw him join Peterborough Northern Star Reserves before signing for Stamford last season.

He played in goal for the Daniels during their FA Trophy triumph over Kidderminster before suffering an injury.

Steele then joined County in April on a short-term deal and has been helping Deeping with their pre-season preparations following a change in their management structure.

Daniel French has now taken sole charge of the Clarets following the resignation of joint boss Lee Clarke after the duo had joined Deeping at the start of last season from Blackstones.

French will also be supported in a player coaching role by long-serving Deeping defender Dan Flack while Lee Crockett remains at the club as goalkeeping coach.

Deeping are in action at the Haydon Whitham Stadium on Saturday when hosting Southern League side St Neots (3pm).
