Adult ballet classes in Rutland will start in January 2020 at the Victoria Hall, Oakham
If the words ‘ballet lessons’ brings to mind children bouncing about in tutus, then prepare to pirouette to a different viewpoint.
Vanessa Burzynski is bringing ‘Silver Swans’ ballet - aimed at the over 55s - to Oakham following the success of similar classes in Leicestershire.
Having started as a pilot scheme initiated by the Royal Academy of Dance, Vanessa's classes are aimed at complete beginners through to those who trained as children and have picked up their ballet shoes once more.
She currently teaches nearly 90 adult students, and has decided to launch sessions in Rutland in the new year.
Vanessa said: “I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the response to my classes for over 55s, and the joy they bring to the men and women who come along each week.
“Not only are they staying active, but they're also improving their balance, coordination, flexibility and continuing to learn new skills.”
While there is no upper or lower age restriction to being a ‘Silver Swan’, Vanessa is finding ages range from people in their 40s through to her oldest pupil, who is 84.
Lindsay Winstanley from Langham started attending one of Vanessa’s classes in Leicestershire a month ago and, at 56, admits she is ‘one of the younger ones’.
“At first I was very dubious about going, but everyone was so welcoming," she said.
"It does take me back to my childhood - I did ballet when I was about 10. However, it seems a lot more of a workout than it use to!"
Classes include barre exercises and group dances, with the patterns and routines built up week by week, so it’s manageable for everyone.
“This is something you can do with like-minded people,” added Lindsay.
“We have a real giggle - in fact, we all fall about laughing sometimes - but everyone puts in effort and gets a lot from the classes.
“It’s a safe environment and any medical conditions or injuries people might have are taken into consideration.”
Sessions are designed for beginners and improvers, and as well as learning the moves, those who attend are invited on social trips such as going to watch the ballet.
The new Silver Swan class will start on Thursday, January 9 from 4.30 to 5.30pm in the Victoria Hall, Oakham.
Would-be swans don't need any previous ballet training or special clothes - a comfortable outfit such as a t-shirt and leggings or jogging bottoms can be worn, while adult ballet shoes can be bought for under £10.
