Rutland will have a McDonald's after county councillors approved plans for restaurant in Oakham

Plans for a McDonald's have been approved in Rutland, making it the final county in England to be home to one of the fast food giant's restaurants.

The county councillors' decision tonight (Tuesday, January 14) means that a 24-hour restaurant can now be built at the junction of Lands' End Way and Hackamore Way.

Held in the council chamber at the offices in Oakham, Rutland County Council planning and licensing committee meeting heard arguments for and against the plans, which also include a drive-thru and would create 65 jobs. After about an hour of discussion, eight councillors voted in favour of approving the plans, with one abstention.

Council planning officers had recommended councillors approve the application, saying the development would “not have an adverse impact on neighbouring residential amenities and/or the character of the surrounding area”.

They also said that the proposed site is allocated for employment use and the off-street car parking is in line with council policy.

Now granted, the approval is subject to 27 conditions ranging from the materials used to build the restaurant, to carrying out the building work in line with a badger survey to ensure wildlife at the site is protected.

Other conditions state that “odour control measures”should be installed and that the development can’t be used until the car park, cycle stands, electric vehicle charging points and the disabled car parking bays have been installed to make sure on-street parking doesn’t happen.

A large children’s outdoor play area would also be built at the restaurant site.
