Rutland Lancaster Bomber flypast cancelled

A Lancaster bomber flypast over Eyebrook Reservoir to mark the 75th anniversary of a RAF bombing raid over Germany in Second World War was cancelled today (May 16).

The iconic plane was due to take to the sky over the reservoir but the flight had to be cancelled due to the windspeed being outside of the Lancaster’s flight limitations.

But a Typhoon fighter jet flew over the reservoir in place of the Lancaster at 12.22pm.

The flypast was organised by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF).

The Lancaster is 70 years old and is one of only two of the planes in the world which are airworthy.

Its age means it is only permitted to fly in certain weather conditions in order to preserve its airworthiness.

The Lancaster bomber was used in the Dambusters bombing raid - an attack on German dams in1943 using a ‘bouncing bomb’.
