What Lies Beneath by Adam Croft is a top seller at Walkers bookshops in Stamford and Oakham

A best-selling author’s Rutland-based novel was swept off the shelves within hours by bookworms eager to read it.

What Lies Beneath is Adam Croft’s first novel to be set in a real location and he hopes it will be part of his ‘flagship’ series.

Yesterday (July 28) when the book was released, Adam and his wife Jo greeted shoppers at Walkers of Oakham bookshop.

Adam, who lives in Bedfordshire, said: “I’ve made sure they can get a signed copy for cheaper or for the same price as Amazon. I am really keen to make make sure it stays local for people.

“I’ve had a lot of people from Canada, America and Australia saying when they can travel to Europe they will add Rutland to the list.”

Jo added: “We can’t believe how well it’s taken off. It’s been really well embraced by all the local businesses supporting us.”

Copies of the book had to be re-stocked at Walkers in Stamford and Oakham just hours after being put out on the shelves.

Adam said staff at the bookshop reported it is their biggest seller since the release of J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

He added that tens of thousands have already been sold worldwide.

“It’s different from ones before that have done really well because this means a lot more to me. It’s somewhere I know and my parents live here,” he said.

What Lies Beneath follows a detective as she uncovers the dark truth behind a body being found dead on the rocks at Normanton Church.

It is the first novel in the Rutland crime series with at least two more books set to be released in the next year.

Adam said: “It’s something I will carry on for years and hopefully build a Rutland staple.

“I don’t have an end in mind - the more I visit the more ideas I have for it.”

Adam has also been approached with plans to turn the books into a film or television series.
