Plans for £5m expansion at Catmose College in Oakham approved to allow 30 extra pupils a year with new building also on the cards

Catmose College in Oakham has been given formal approval to increase its capacity to admit 30 extra pupils a year.

Working with Rutland County Council, the school plans to offer an extra 30 places a year, starting in Year 7 from September 2022. This will see 240 pupils accepted into Year 7, rather than the usual 210 and the school says this growth is needed to meet local need.

A statement issued by the school said staff were "delighted" that the plans had been approved, following a consultation in the community.

In addition to the proposed increase in pupil numbers, the school has secured a £5m investment from the government to build extra classrooms and facilities, subject to planning permission, and offer additional support and a broader curriculum.

The first phase of the expansion project is well underway with the former Brightways building being converted into five new classrooms, office space, toilets and lockers to support the expanded modern foreign languages provision.

By moving the modern foreign languages, the school will be able to further expand its client services to offer a broader range of pastoral and welfare support to pupils.

The second phase of the project will involve the construction of a new building behind the existing sports centre which will include new science laboratories, an ICT suite and additional design technology and food classrooms.
