Market Deeping Post Office closes after resignation of postmaster and residents could face six month wait before it reopens

Market Deeping Post Office has closed, leaving many residents in limbo as it looks like it could be six months before it reopens with new owners.

The branch, in Church Street, shut on January 6, due to the resignation of the previous postmaster - with the nearest post offices now being Deeping St James, Northborough or Langtoft.

The town has also lost all its banks, with Barclays the last to go in 2019.

District and town councillor, Bob Broughton (Con), said: “It is disappointing that the post office has closed but there is hope, from what I have heard, that someone is going to take it on but that could take a while so we have to be patient.”

Coun Virginia Moran (Ind), who also sits on the district and town council, has been trying to get a new cash machine instated for the town, including looking at if the old phone box could be used for this.

She said: “I wish the current post office owners all the best for any future business and hope the process for the new owners is successful and look forward to seeing the new post office open in the summer.”

Market Deeping mayor, Joshua Yarham, added that he was aware that all new tenants have to go through a process to reopen the post office services.

“I have heard many concerns about the post office shutting but it is a temporary closure and I hope it will be resolved as soon as possible,” he said.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We know how important a Post Office is to a community. We are currently investigating the options available to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community. In the interim alternative branches includes Deeping St James and Northborough.”
