Peach and Warwood win competitive doubles clash
The last of Toft Men's Winter competitions were concluded last Sunday with the 36-hole finals of the singles and pairs knockout tournaments.
Both competitions were very close with some excellent golf taking both events to the penultimate hole.
In the singles, Tom Shinkins opened up a four hole lead by the 10th hole only to be pegged back to all square after 18 by opponent Lewis Homewood.
Lewis went into a three-hole lead after 27 holes, however, Tom fought back but finally succumbed 2&1 on the 35th hole.
The pairs final contested by the pairings of Alan Peach and Tom Warwood and Martin Rutterford and Chris Andrews was equally competitive.
Peach and Warwood eventually ran out victors by 2&1 on the penultimate hole.
The first men's trophy of the summer season was competed for last Saturday.
The stableford competition was won by Paul Fox (22) on 40 points with Gary Pearce (9) second on countback.
Fox captured the Hereward Trophy for highest scoring 19 to 54 handicaps with Colin Pearce (20) in second place with 36 points.
The first monthly men's medal of the season was also played on Sunday with some magnificent scoring, seven players returning level par or better.
In first place was Curtis Mayoh (15) who scored 67 with Darryl Vaus (9) and Robert Fox (22) hot on his heels with 68s.
The C team, under the captaincy of Mick Roberts, played their first match of the season last Saturday against Thorney Lakes.
This was a good enjoyable match played on the super fast Toft greens which was halved 3-3.
The pairing of Jim McLuckie and Phil Pavier were on fire winning their match 8&6. Other winners were the pairings of Tom Warwood and Andy Paterson (5&4) and Keith Duly and Malcolm Croft (2&1).
The B team, under the captaincy this year of Alan Peach, have also played their first game of the season on home soil against Gedney Hill which also resulted in a 3-3 draw.
The winning pairs for Toft ware Ian Delaine Smith and Andy Kehoe, and Chris Handley and John Mayoh. The pairings of Alan Smith and Curtis Mayoh and Ken Smith and Keith Baggaley both halved their matches.
The seniors section played a roll up stableford qualifier competition where entrants had no fixed tee times.
There were only 26 entrants for the competition as it was a wet and breezy morning, but 21 hardy souls managed to play the full round.
Third place went to Graham Hughes with 35 points, second spot went to Chris Elsey also with 35 points and the winner by a margin of two points was Nigel Daniels with 37 points.
Sixty-four players turned out to contest the first round of the Seniors Summer Eclectic Stableford competition which is decided over the course of eight rounds.
With a cold start to the day and a stiff breeze throughout the round, scoring was far from easy.
Countback was required to separate the top three places. Jamie Mclaren played a very steady round to win with 35 points, from Dom Sherry in second place who just edged out Jim Clayton in third spot.
The seniors have also played two further friendly matches.
The first home match of the season against Nene Park was extremely close with the final score decided by the last pairing at the final hole.
The match resulted with honours even at 3.5-3.5 which was played in murky conditions although thankfully the rain stayed away.
The winning Toft pairs were Tim Fitzgerald and Paul Shaw (7&5), Duncan Cameron and David Sharp (4&2), Graham Hughes and Dom Sherry (2&1) with the match involving Nigel Turnbull and Peter Henderson halved.
Captain Cameron then took his team to neighbours Burghley Park on Thursday which turned into a lovely sunny spring day after a cold start.
Burghley used home advantage to consign Toft to a 5.5-3.5 defeat. The only winners for Toft were Nigel Daniels and Richard Shuttlewood (3&2) with the pairings of David Haycox and Rod Campbell, Alan Barnes and Geoff Tinson and Peter Spencer and Allan Maguire halving their matches.
Toft ladies' team made a brilliant start to their golfing campaign in the National Annodata matchplay tournament in their first round match played at home against the competitive Burghley Park B team.
Conditions were perfect for golf with warm Spring sunshine and a course in magnificent order which was matched by a great display of match form from the home team.
Mairead Scott was in outstanding form, winning 7&6 and two more wins came from Alison Ravenhill and Louise Bradley in tight finishes with matches going to the 17th and 18th holes.
Lorraine Robinson likewise had a battle with her opponent, losing on the 16th hole and Cathy Lee eventually secured a half after a ding-dong round.
Toft's 3.5-1.5 win puts them into the second round much encouraged by this cracking start.
Team players paid tribute to the support and good wishes from the ladies and particular thanks went to their grand caddies Karen Parsonage, Sandra Wildmore, Mandy Lees, Linda Moss and Helen Roscoe.
On the first day of Spring Toft Ladies played their first friendly match of the year against Elton Furze in ideal conditions.
The match involved five pairs, one more than usual which gave a chance for more players to experience and enjoy betterball matchplay.
Helen Roscoe and Marie Davenport put up stout resistance against two lower handicappers before losing 4&3.
Judith Childs and Margaret Wilson also faced strong opponents, losing 4&2, while Karen Parsonage and Margaret Dair took their match to the 16th hole but lost 3&2.
Fortunes changed with two wins from Toft's final pairs, Bee McKechnie and Lisa Hollingsworth charging home at the 12th hole with a massive 8&6 result and Anne Wildish and Cathy Lee took their match to the last hole to win two up.
Toft lost 3-2 in what turned out to be a challenging day's golf.
Forty Toft players took part in the final winter Texas Scramble with a shotgun start on a glorious spring day with the added test of a strong north breeze.
The winning team with a splendid score of 60.9 were Mairead Scott, John Ogden, Jim McLuckie and Steve Burling making hay with superb putting deadly enough to make six birdies.
Not far behind were Angela Jenkinson and Tim Ayliff on 63.9 and in third place were Linda Moss, Lisa Hollingsworth, Max Baker and Paul Hubbard.
Thanks went to the halfway house refreshment team and to those who had donated raffle prizes.
Lady captain Sandie Streets was delighted to announce more than £400 had been raised from the four winter Texas Scrambles going to the Dementia Support South Lincs charity
