The medal win exceeded the expectations of the team which also consisted of Hamish Turnbull and Jack Carlin.

Lowe said: "I feel ecstatic.

"I didn't think a silver medal was possible going into it so we'd definitely take second place to a team like the Dutch.

"The rest of the team deserve huge credit and I am so pleased."

Lowe was the opening rider in the three-man team event and Great Britain were just two-tenths of a second behind the Dutch at the end of his leg.

However, the all-conquering Netherlands team eventually romped to victory by beating their own world record in a time of 40.949.

Great Britain had secured their place in the final after beating Germany by setting the second fastest time of the heats in 41.819.

That was then surpassed by the Dutch who clocked 41.191 to set up the final showdown.

Lowe is the second Lincolnshire athlete to have won a medal. Louth’s Ros Canter was among the equestrian team to win Britain’s first gold at the games.

He is also the second Stamford athlete to compete at a Paris Olympics after Lord David Burghley first raced in the 110m hurdles in 1924.

Lord Burghley went to also compete at both the 1928 and 1932 Olympics, winning gold in the former in the 400m hurdles event.
