RAF band to play Cranwell for Wings Appeal charity

An RAF orchestra will get into the swing of things when it plays at Cranwell next month.

The Royal Air Force Swing Wing (the Dance Orchestra of the Band of the Royal Air Force College) will perform at Whittle Hall RAF College Cranwell, at 7.30pm on Friday, April 17, in aid of Wings Appeal funds.

An RAF spokesman said: “Every two years the members of the Cranwell RAF Association are fortunate to be allocated one of the RAF Band’s busy schedule concerts. The members feel that this is an opportunity to show their thanks for the support that is given by the inhabitants of the surrounding area in their appeal efforts to raise money to help less fortunate members and past members of the RAF who have a variety of problems.

“It is opportune that this year coincides with the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain which is acknowledged throughout the year but especially in Wings Week in September when our few pilots successfully took on the invading German aircraft.”

The Wings Appeal raises funds to help current and former members of the RAF and their families. The fund is put to good use in a number situations, whether it’s an injured airman fighting to get back onto his feet, a young child missing their parent away on overseas operations or a World War Two veteran needing a shoulder to lean on.
